CRM and data quality

What data must be in place before buying revenue AI?

When it comes up

Before any revenue AI purchase, especially forecasting, scoring, deal intelligence and agents; when a pilot underperforms.

Your options

Fix data first, then buy

Fits when: Core CRM fields are badly incomplete or systems are disconnected.

Watch out: Data projects can drag on; set a scope and deadline tied to a use case.

Buy and fix in parallel

Fits when: Data is usable for the target use case, with known gaps you can close during the pilot.

Watch out: Pilot results may understate value; plan for it.

Buy tools that create the data

Fits when: The gap is activity data (emails, meetings, calls) that capture tools can fill automatically.

Watch out: Consent, privacy and retention rules for captured data.

How to decide

For each candidate use case, answer five questions: what data it needs; whether you have it at sufficient quality; whether the tool can reach it; who owns fixing gaps; and how you will measure success. Ask vendors to run on a sample of your real data during evaluation. Make a short readiness check a gate in your buying process.

Trade-offs

Waiting for perfect data delays value; buying without readiness wastes budget and credibility; capture tools can solve activity data quickly but add privacy obligations.

Real examples

What to check first

  1. Completeness and freshness of the ten CRM fields your target use case depends on.
  2. Which customer signals (usage, support, billing) sit outside the CRM.
  3. Consent status and suppression data for any contact an AI may reach.
