Architecture Blueprint

📝 ADR library

An Architecture Decision Record captures one significant decision: the context, the options, what you decided and what follows from it. The format follows Documenting Architecture Decisions (Michael Nygard, 2011), with an explicit “options considered” section added.

The template

  1. Title — a short noun phrase for the decision.
  2. Status — proposed, accepted, deprecated, superseded.
  3. Context — The forces at play: technical, business, political, constraints. What problem needs a decision now?
  4. Options considered — Two or more real options, including 'do nothing'. One line each on why it could work.
  5. Decision — What we will do, in full sentences and active voice: 'We will…'.
  6. Consequences — Everything that follows — good, bad and neutral. What becomes easier, harder, more expensive?
