Prompt vs skill vs agent

Prompt

A one-off instruction you type into a chat. Great for a quick task; you rewrite it every time and the quality depends on the day.

Works in: Any chat assistant

Skill

A reusable, packaged way of doing one job well: clear inputs, step-by-step instructions, an output format and a quality checklist. Saved as a SKILL.md folder, an assistant can load it whenever the job comes up.

Works in: Assistants and agents that support Agent Skills (SKILL.md), or pasted as a prompt anywhere

Agent

An assistant that can plan and take several steps with tools (search, files, apps) to reach a goal. Agents get better and safer when they use well-written skills and a human approves what goes out.

Works in: Coding agents, workplace agents, custom GPTs and copilots

Where SKILL.md skills work

  • Claude (claude.ai apps) — Download the SKILL.md zip (it contains one folder named after the skill).
  • Claude Code — Unzip and copy the skill folder to ~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/ (all your projects) or .claude/skills/<skill-name>/ in a repository (shared with your team).
  • ChatGPT / Codex — Codex (CLI and IDE extension): unzip and copy the skill folder to .agents/skills/ in your repository, or to ~/.agents/skills/ for all projects.
  • GitHub Copilot / VS Code — Unzip and copy the skill folder into your repository at .github/skills/ (or .claude/skills/ or .agents/skills/).
  • Gemini CLI — Unzip and copy the skill folder to .gemini/skills/ (or .agents/skills/) in your workspace, or ~/.gemini/skills/ for all projects.

Every skill page has the full install steps. Other tools: use “Copy as prompt” or the agent instructions.

AI drafts, you decide. Skills help you start faster; check every fact, number and name before you use the output, and only paste data your company allows into AI tools. Time-saved figures are rough editorial estimates, not measurements.

Skills export in the open Agent Skills (SKILL.md) format. Spotted a problem? Post in the community.
